This is how to upgrade the firmware of your rebadged orinoco
This may not be the best/easy way but when doing a search I got little help. Most of the referenced links didnt work :/ I was completely lost, and could see how less technical users would give up. I decided to hack at the thing until I got it working, and surprising enough I now have a compaq WL110 with Orinoco firmware
![]() Windows XP laptop with Compaq WL110 First I inserted the card and it was detected as Compaq WL110 I downloaded the latest Orinoco driver and extracted it In device manager I viewed the properties of the Compaq card I chose the Driver tab and pressed update driver Choose "Install from a list or specific.." press next Choose "Dont search, I will choose....." press next Press Have Disk and browse to the pc-card folder from the extracted files From the list of hardware you will see "Orinoco PC Card (5 volt)" choose that Reboot the machine Now in the registry find hkey_local_machine\system\currentcontrolset\servic es\wlluc48b\enum One of the first entry should read something like 0 reg_sz pcmcia\compaq-compaq_wl110_pc_card-e648\1 Open this entry and copy everything BETWEEN the slashes (not including them) mine said compaq-compaq_wl110_pc_card-e648 , keep that in the clipboard Download the firmware upgrade for the Orinoco card I used a really cool FREEWARE Hex Editor to open the firmware upgrade executable http://www.funduc.com/fshexedit.htm Search for 911f then highlight the entire string "lucent_technologies-wavelan/ieee-911f" From the EDIT menu choose paste special The box should say what you copied from the registry (compaq-compaq_wl110_pc_card-e648 for example) Choose the paste mode as overwrite You are almost done. You will now need to look at the part you pasted, most likely it will not have the same amount of characters as what used to be there Mine ended up as compaq-compaq_wl110_pc_card-e648-911f For all the extra letters you will have to DOUBLE CLICK (to select) then hit Control-B This lets you turn all the bits to zero (which shows up as a period in the text view) It looked like compaq-compaq_wl110_pc_card-e648.... when I was done Choose FILE Save As. To verify the work quickly, browse to the folder where you saved your new modified file, if it has an icon that looks like a pcmcia card you didnt mess up. If the icon is generic then it wont work. Now you can flash ![]() This took alot of hell to figure out, thought Id let others benefit (or in other words not suffer) Last edited by ciper : 06-24-2004 at 10:07 PM. |

Or you can do it the easy way and use the Agere firmware, which works on all Orinoco cards and rebrands.

Why isnt a link to firmware upgrade from Agere in the faq? Didnt realize I was recreating the wheel.
Oh well, a similar method will work for other cards so this is a good starting point for them. Last edited by ciper : 06-25-2004 at 02:13 PM. |

need flash dump from Avaya (Orinco) made with flash.exe
I need flash dump for Avaya Silver (or Orinco) because I can't change the firmware with the windows updater. It seems like the firmware is broken, but with flash.exe I can read/write the PDA, CIS, FLASH on it.
Can anyone send me the files obtained after running flash.exe with -pd, -cd, -fd options? Any help will be apreciated. Thanks. mail: undercode1@yahoo.com ------------- merged...g8t Last edited by undercode : 06-30-2004 at 11:32 AM. |
